Strange Habits
Learning to Use one's Limbs, Vol. II
First Bath
Learning to Use one's Limbs, Vol. I
It's non-stop entertainment watching Leo learn to use these "arms" and "legs" and "hands" that seem to always be attached to him. Particularly when he can be captured doing something adult-like, such as waking up on a pool-side lounge chair to remember that his taxes were due last week! Yipes!
Or, doing his best impression of Nosferatu, the vampire, when exposed to a garlic necklace. Yeee!

Meet the Grandma's

Everything's working, just need some target practice
Sleep, or the lack thereof
A common bit of advice I heard prior to Leo's arrival was "get some sleep now, 'cause you won't get it once the baby comes." I'm now here to tell you: true that. The past four nights since we returned home from the hospital have consisted of Laura and me taking shifts between the living room and our bedroom, alternately sleeping, comforting, dozing, changing and feeding. The consequences of this type of sleep deprivation are obvious (zombie-like behavior), but the most interesting one to me has been the total detachment from the time of day and what should be happening at that time. Mornings could be afternoons, middle of the night might as well be dinner time. It's ultra weird, but has its little rewards, such as this cute little bed-head face that we awoke to this morning. Plus, check out the accidental smile!
What's in a Name?
We've received a few queries as to the origins of the little guy's name. Here's a rundown:
Leo - From Laura's dear maternal great uncle, Leo Jacob, and his son, "Little Leo." We hope he inherits their mutual sense of adventure, enthusiasm for life, and capacity to love people deeply and warmly. Laura is also fond of multi-syllabic names with few letters (got that?) that aren't nicknames (Leo is his full name). Finally, Laura and I are both Leos in the the zodiac (July 31 and August 7).
Bryant - From our street here in San Francisco's Mission District, Bryant Street. We wanted to commemorate our time here in this house that we love, and help Leo remember a special place for all of us when he came into the world. The history nerd in me compels me to point out that Bryant Street itself takes its name from Edwin Bryant, who published one of the early, first-hand American accounts of California in the 1840's (including a description of the Presidio) and served as one of the early alcaldes (mayors) of San Francisco (more here for fellow nerds: http://www.xmission.com/~octa/DonnerParty/Bryant.htm).
Thomson - From his dad's side, he earns the curse of a common name spelled uncommonly. Welcome to a lifetime of Thompson's, Thomas's, Thomsen's, Tompson's, etc, little Leo.
And Thombaum, you've probably figured out, is an amalgam of Thomson and Nusbaum. We figured we'd spare him that little adventure.

Rock steady, Leo
Bienvenidos Leo Bryant Thomson
Leo gracefully entered the world at 8:17 pm on Sunday, November 2, 2008. He weighed 6lbs 15oz and was 20 inches long. Laura did a knockout job delivering an alert, handsome little boy and she is feeling good after about 16 hours of labor. We stayed in the hospital for another 36 hours afterwards to get everything checked out and it looks as if he is as healthy as he is cute. Needless to say, many more pictures coming. Thanks for everyone's well-wishes!

From the delivery room
No photos (yet), but after 11 hours Laura is doing great and looking forward to the home stretch. We're at 10 cm, and think that she'll start pushing within the hour. She's had an epidural since about noon which has made things pretty mellow. We've been lucky to have great nurse care along with Lana and Emily in the wings. I think that I've learned how to monitor the machines so that I at least look like I know what I'm doing. As always, Laura is tough and cheerful through it all. She's been smiling and laughing a lot - can't ask for much more. Stay tuned for the main event!
